General:

Mexican engine and transmission production ended July 1991 (the end of the 1991 model year, which included the Mexican built Golf GL, GTI, GTI 16v, and some Jetta GLs and Jetta Carats), which signaled the end of those engine and transmission lines for Mexican production. Soon, production of the all-new A3 Golf and Jetta would start here. German production of the 8 valve counterflow engine continued until October of 1991 (when German consumption of the A3 started, which had an all-new crossflow 8 valve design). The ECOdiesel and GLI 16v engines and transmissions were made until July 1992 (the end of the 1992 model year), mainly because those engines ere also used in other VW models. Unfortunately, Volkswagen was headed into dark times, and the A3 Golf and Jetta would be delayed to our shores, not arriving in significant numbers until 1994.

Golf GL/GTI:
